Do Rugs:  Activities that Allow Students to Step, Jump,
Stand, Toss & Tap Their Way into Language Learning
Author:  Linda Eve Seth & Debbie Hisam

Source:  Etc. Publications   www.MAKEFUNoflearning.com
Target Audience:  Pre-K to 5th grade and Special Needs

From the creative authors of G.R.O.W. (Get Rid Of Worksheets) books, Do Rugs is a collection of activities that allow students to participate in learning by DOing movement and actions on pre-marked RUGS.  Both teachers and students will have fun with these engaging activities that promote language learning.

Especially useful for introducing and reinforcing basic skills, the physical responses help students stay involved and focused.  Actions include stepping and hopping on rugs, tossing a beanbag, or tapping spots on the rugs with a flyswatter.

Rugs can be made from felt, plastic shower curtains or vinyl tablecloths, often available at dollar stores.  Each activity provides detailed directions for addressing the language goals of the game, suggested variations to modify levels and increase participation, and a graphic sample of how to create the game-related Do Rug.  Lesson topics include:  animals, categories, seasons, emotions, phonemic awareness, letter recognition, parts of speech, multiple meanings, and much more.

If you've been looking for an engaging way to incorporate movement into your language therapy, Do Rugs is the book for you!

Speech on the Go CD
Author:  Kelly Smith-Vernon, M.A., CCC

Source:  Speaking of Speech.com (SOS.com Products Page)

Speech on the Go is a resource book on disk that is designed to help bridge the gap between articulation therapy, the classroom and home.  It can be used as part of traditional articulation therapy during the carryover phase or even as a resource for speech sound intervention.  Speech on the Go has over one hundred pages of reproducible materials to help the school-based speech language pathologist.  The resource book has four sections:

     • The first section includes various homework sheets for connected

         speech practice.

      • The second section includes handouts to help the busy school SLP

coordinate and collaborate with teachers on students’ articulation

         goals.

      • The third section includes handouts for targeting students’ speech

sounds during everyday activities at home.

     • The fourth section provides “reminder phrases” for each sound to be

used on stickers and bookmarks.  These “reminder phrases” are

designed to be used “on the go” with students.

When Kelly first sent me a preview copy of her Speech on the Go CD, I was immediately impressed with the scope of the materials it contained, and could see many ways in which these materials could be used to support my own busy caseload.   I have not  been disappointed!  Feedback from teachers and parents have from very positive, and I'm delighted to have a resource that is quick and easy to use.
